Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program
Canada has a temporary foreign worker program that was especially designed to help Canadian employers and businesses to meet their labour force needs. The Canadian ministers Diane Finley of Citizenship and Immigration Canada or CIC, and Monte Solberg of Human Resources and Social Development or HRSDC, both announced revisions to the said program. The changes were deemed to be great improvements that will benefit the Canadian employers.
The Temporary foreign worker program is used to allow Canadian companies to hire foreign professionals temporarily until they find a Canadian resident or citizen to take the job. Gearing towards the Advantage Canada strategy created by Canada’s New Government, the Temporary Foreign Worker program gets revamped to make the process faster and easier. Canadian employers will be able to meet the labour demands on time.
If employers are not able to find a suitable Canadian resident or citizen to fill the vacant position, then they may turn to hiring foreign professionals. Now, they can hire foreign nationals for more than a year and companies do not have to wait to get these employees that they need. Extending the duration that these employees can work in the country will allow stability to the employers and employees.
According to the President and CEO of CFIB in Canada, Catherine Swift, “the shortage of labour was at an all-time high, foreign workers are a more and more important resource for small businesses trying to deal with the issue.” Thus, this new change will definitely help Canadian companies to increase productivity.
