Europe Needs Blue Card Skilled Immigrants

The United States of America has what they call the green card. On the other hand, the European Union has proposed a European counterpart which is the blue card. The proposed Blue Card was modelled after the Green Card of the United States. This has been dominating most of the meetings of the European Union to address the need for skilled migrants. The proposed Blue Card is created to answer the issues on labour shortages and demand for highly skilled professionals in the European Union member countries and states.

On September 2007, the European Union Council supported the plans of creating a blue card that is deemed to attract the highly qualified professionals such as IT workers, engineers, and scientists from various regions such as Asia, Latin America, and Africa. The migrants from these regions usually choose the North America or Australia regions over the European countries.

In order to change all that, the Commission Vice President of the EU Commission, Franco Frattini, stated that the European Union must learn how they can compete with other countries in attracting the most highly skilled migrants from around the globe. They must be able to find ways in order to make their immigration policies as attractive and as comprehensible as possible.

The proposed blue card work permit will enable the skilled migrant to remain in an EU state for 2 years and live and work in that country. The migrant can either renew or move to another EU member state.
