The General Skilled Migration Program of Australia has recently been revised and has been effective since September 2007. Also known as GSM, the General Skilled Migration scheme was revamped to reduce the number of various visa types for skilled migration. Previously, there were about 15 types of skilled migration visas. In 2007, it was reduced to 9 types.

That is just the major revision made to the program. Other revisions included changes in the points system for skilled migrants. The government of Australia rewards bigger points for excellent English language skills. There are also additional bonus points for having advanced Australian educational experience and work experience. For example, if you have completed a Masters degree in Australia, then more points will be awarded to your total points.

It was in April 2007 that Australia’s Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews announced these reforms with the Education, Science and Training Minister Julie Bishop. According to Bishop, the changes will provide better odds for international students to enjoy the full benefits of studying in the country. This will also aid the country in proving its strong reputation in the education sector. Aside from reducing the types of visas that Australia offers its migrants, it has also replaced the other visas with new types of visas.

Australia’s Immigration has designed a temporary visa for foreign students studying in the country to remain in Australia to gain work experience. This kind of visa is called the Skilled–Graduate Visa. Aside from that, there is also the Skilled–Recognized Graduate visa, which is allotted for recent graduates from the recognized schools and have the valuable skills that Australia feels are crucial for the country’s well being.

There are many ways for a foreign individual to apply for a green card or lawful permanent residence status in the United States. One of the many ways to do obtain a green card is through the green card lottery provided by the US. Each year, there are 50,000 to 55,000 green cards issued by the government of the United States. This is made possible by the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program which is more popularly called the green card lottery.

The Green Card Lottery involves a random selection of applicants through a computer-generated draw. When the selection is completed, the selected applicants, together with their spouse, and all unmarried children below 21 years of age qualify to apply for permanent resident status in the country.

The Diversity Visa Lottery Program is open to citizens from a country with low rate of immigration to the United States. It is not open for nationals of countries who have sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the US over the last five years. This lottery is held each year and selects around 110,000 applicants. Once selected, these 110,000 chosen applicants must start application immediately because once 50,000 green cards have been issued or if the fiscal year ends, the lottery will closes.

Once you are sent a visa through this green card lottery program, you may be able to live and work permanently in the US. Your spouse and unmarried children below the age of 21 will also be able to study and work permanently in the country.

More and more foreign nationals are considering migrating to Denmark as seen in the statistics for Denmark Green Cards. In year 2007, there were around 1,692 Green Cards issued by Denmark. That is a growth of 342 from the year 2006, a notable 25 percent increase. However, the Green Cards issued are expected to double, making it a 50 percent increase towards the end of 2007 to early 2008.

The Danish green card is issued to skilled migrants who are not nationals of the European Union countries. The green card in Denmark may seem to differ from the other green cards in different countries. The Danish green card is provided to migrants who come to the country under a residence permit in order to find work. This means that you do not need to have an employment offer to apply for a Danish green card. At the same time, it cannot be renewed and has a validity of six months. This is very different from other green cards like that of the United States which are for permanent residency.

The Danish Green Card is granted to petitioners who have qualified under a points-based system provided by Denmark. Their points-based system takes into consideration major factors such as the language skills, education, age, and work experience. Note that this Green Card is not a work permit, you are not obliged to accept any job, not until you find suitable work. Once you get an offer, you must apply for a work permit. Thus, the green card is just your legal status in the country while seeking for a job.

Canada has a temporary foreign worker program that was especially designed to help Canadian employers and businesses to meet their labour force needs. The Canadian ministers Diane Finley of Citizenship and Immigration Canada or CIC, and Monte Solberg of Human Resources and Social Development or HRSDC, both announced revisions to the said program. The changes were deemed to be great improvements that will benefit the Canadian employers.

The Temporary foreign worker program is used to allow Canadian companies to hire foreign professionals temporarily until they find a Canadian resident or citizen to take the job. Gearing towards the Advantage Canada strategy created by Canada’s New Government, the Temporary Foreign Worker program gets revamped to make the process faster and easier. Canadian employers will be able to meet the labour demands on time.

If employers are not able to find a suitable Canadian resident or citizen to fill the vacant position, then they may turn to hiring foreign professionals. Now, they can hire foreign nationals for more than a year and companies do not have to wait to get these employees that they need. Extending the duration that these employees can work in the country will allow stability to the employers and employees.

According to the President and CEO of CFIB in Canada, Catherine Swift, “the shortage of labour was at an all-time high, foreign workers are a more and more important resource for small businesses trying to deal with the issue.” Thus, this new change will definitely help Canadian companies to increase productivity.

L-1 Visa is a non-immigrant visa document issued by the United States government that allows companies that are in the US and abroad to relocate their employees from their offices abroad to work for their company in the USA. The employee must have been working for the same company, whether for a subsidiary or branch, for at least a year or the past three years.

There are two types of L-visas. One is the L-1A visa for managers and executives and is valid up to seven years. The other one is the L-1B visa for employees with specialized knowledge and is valid for five years. After the expiration period, the alien can only reapply for an L-1 visa only after a year of leaving the United States. However, a person holding an L visa can eventually apply for a Green Card under the dual content guidelines.

The first requirement that needs to be sent to the USCIS centre is the Form I-129 and the L-supplement form. Employers filing for L-1 visas must have valid proof that the credentials of a certain employee being petitioned for the L visa are of greater value and that the qualification of the employee is significant to the need of the company.

The filing fee for the L visa form I-129 is $190 and $500 for Fraud Prevention and Detection fee. The usual processing time of the L-1 visa is about two to four months, though employers can request a Premium Processing for an extra fee of $1,000, the processing time then will take only about 15 days.

The Czech Republic is looking at creating its very own Green Card, having modelled it from the legal permanent residence card of the United States. The country is looking at introducing its green card to attract a number of skilled workers into the country. This green card is intended to attract skilled professionals from the non-EU member countries or states.

The proposed green card from the Czech Republic is said to be easily obtainable. When an applicant qualifies, he or she will be able to receive the card within 30 days. This card will allow them to work for an employer for two years.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade head, Karel Machotka has announced that there will be three groups of foreign workers who may qualify for the said card. The first group who may qualify for the green card will be the professionals who have university degrees. The second group are the specialists who have vocational high school qualifications focused on the technical sectors. Lastly, the third group who may qualify for such green card are the top management personnel.

The proposed green card of Czech Republic is to be presented to the government and if approved will be implemented sometime during the first half of the year 2008. The need for designing such a card was proposed by the business sector who had constantly complained about the lack of labour force in the country. Karel Machotka has specifically mentioned that the automobile industry will greatly benefit if the proposed Czech Republic green card gets approved.

In previous years, international workers or foreign professionals working in France were allowed to bring their spouses. However, they were not allowed to work. Because of the recently passed Immigration and Integration Law in 2006, the country of France now allows family members of the skilled international staff to work.

This proposed policy in 2006 was implemented in 2007. The purpose of allowing family members of the skilled worker to work is another result of employer and company requests. Some French companies would complain that employees will turn down their offers simply because their partners will not be able to work in France. Some concerns involve dual careers as well as spouse or partner employment. Employees being assigned an international assignment will turn the offer down for such reasons.

Because of this, the spouse and family members will now be allowed to work in France. However, the condition is that the skilled worker must fall under the intra-group transfers as well as the workers who fall under the category “Compétences et Talents”, which means Skills and Talents. This category was designed for international professionals who are most likely to participate in the economic development of France as well as its scientific, intellectual, cultural, or humanitarian growth. This action was taken to create an attractive offer for the highly skilled and mobile employees who can greatly contribute to the economy of France.

Note that the family members, including the spouses, falling under the Skills and Talents category, may apply for a Private and Family Life residence permit for a duration of one year. This permit enables the family members to work in the country. The permit can also be renewed.

The aging population and lack of skilled workers are just two of the main issues that continue to worry the European Unions. They constantly struggle to find skilled and unskilled workers to fill the job positions in their countries. With these in mind, the European Union is already turning its direction to hiring from non EU members. The European Union members have been constantly seeking help from third world countries in order to find employees to meet the labour demands.

The continental European Union continues to look for aid in the Asian countries, and India in particular. The workforce that it needs has been addressed by the ever increasing population of India and its expertise in the world of Information Technology.

At the moment, the MOIA or the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs has been discussing to make the migration easier and less complicated for highly skilled Indian professionals. MOIA is in the process of discussing and negotiating this with countries such as Sweden, Poland, Belgium, and France. In fact, the MOIA has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding or MOU with the International Organization for Migration or IM to assist and quicken the process of Indian nationals migrating to countries in the European Union.

According to the IOM, they will initially try this proposal with the other countries especially in the UK, Italy, Spain, Ireland, and Germany. In order to assess the needs of the mentioned countries above, a toll free hotline and a resource centre will be set up in India to provide more information.

A US Green Card is the more popular term for LPR or Lawful Permanent Residence. If you are a foreigner and you want to work and live permanently in the United States of America, you must apply for a green card. The Green Card provides official immigration status in the country. Below are the steps involved in obtaining a US green card.

To be eligible to apply for a US green card, you must have a sponsor to petition for you to come and live permanently in the US. A foreign national may apply for immigration either through a family member or through employment. The two groups are further subdivided into sub categories. However, the process and forms required will be similar

The things that you will need to prepare in order to obtain the US Green Card include the form I-485. This form is the application to register permanent residence. Aside from that, biometrics data will be requested from you as well as a medical examination sheet or the form G-325A. You will need two colored photos for the form.

If you are applying for a Green Card based on a family member, then you must submit the form I-864 to be completed by your sponsor. You will need to have the evidence of inspection or admission into the United States by showing your Form I-94 or the arrival-departure record. If you seek employment while the case is being processed, you can apply for a work permit by completing and submitting the form I-765.

Aside from these, you will also have to pay the respective application fees. Other forms may be required from you depending on the classification of the immigration petition you are undergoing. You may check with your local US embassy or with the USCIS.

If you are planning to study in the United Kingdom, then you will need a UK student visa. Getting a UK student visa is a multi-step process. However, it should not be difficult to obtain one, as long as you have the requirements and documents ready.

Individuals who wish to study in the UK should provide documents that show that they have already been accepted by a learning institution the United Kingdom. The course must be on a full-time basis in that academic institution. This means 15 hours a week spent in studying. Another point that you should keep in mind is that you must be able to prove that you can cover the cost of your studies as well as the cost of living without having to work. As long as you meet these conditions, then there should be no problem in getting a UK student visa.

Those who are on a UK student visa are allowed to work during term time for up to 20 hours a week, and 40 hours a week during the holidays. At the same time, there are usually no restrictions on a spouse and children working in the country as long as the student studies in the country for more than a year.

Another important thing to remember is that the student visa applicant must be able to prove to the immigration and visa officers that they will return home at the end of the course. If you are a citizen of a visa-national country, meaning you need a visa to enter the UK even as a tourist, then you must apply for the UK student visa at your local British Embassy or Consulate.
