How Many Immigrants Will Be Accepted in Canada in 2008?

As the number of immigrants to Canada continues to rise, the country expects it to grow over the next few years. By the year 2008, Canada anticipates to welcome around 240,000 to 265,000 migrants. The figures were based on the 2007 report announced by the House of Commons, late October 2007.

The House of Commons presented the Annual Report to Parliament on Immigration for the year 2007. It has presented immigration data from the year 2006. It has also listed the proposed strategies that Canada is looking to consider for the year 2008.

Back in 2006, there were about 251,649 immigrants accepted and given permanent residency in Canada. More than half of this figure goes to the immigrants by employment. Among the 138,257 employees were business migrants, skilled migrants, live-in caregivers, and provincial nominees. Of the total number of migrants, 70,506 accounted for immigration based on family. There were also 32,492 immigrants who were granted asylum or refugee status in Canada. The remaining number of 10,223 migrants was based on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.

As they continue to expect the growth of petitioners wanting to migrate to Canada, the Canadian government is also preparing to increase the number of permanent residencies that the country will be granting. According to Immigration Minister Diane Finley, “Our government believes that immigration plays an important role in building our communities and growing our economy.” It only goes to show that immigration targets will certainly help in growing the country’s economy. Canada will continue to benefit from these newcomers and their families too.
