Visas are considered by the South African mission abroad and are required to be affixed to the applicant’s passport before departing for the RSA (Republic of South Africa). Visas are not issued upon arrival at South African ports of entry. An applicant who arrives without a visa will be refused entry into the RSA and put on a return flight to their nation of origin.

Applicants who wish to apply for a South Africa tourist visa will need two passport-size photos with signature on the reverse side, a passport valid for six months from the date of departure, one completed application form, proof of sufficient funds to cover the visit, and a return/onward ticket. He/she should also have no criminal record, and must be of sound body and mind. In case one fails to comply with the regulations, the applicant is required to leave a cash deposit with the Immigration Officer.

Applications should be made properly in advance. Although the shortest processing period is three days, it is advisable for applicants to apply up to 10 weeks before the departure date.

On the other hand, those who desire to apply for a South African work visa must consider the following requirements: An applicant must be a desirable inhabitant and have a good character. He/she must not be probably harmful to South African welfare, and must not have an occupation where there is already an adequate amount of people available to fulfil the present requirements of that occupation.

To apply for a South African visa, you can go directly to your nearest South African diplomatic office in your country of normal residence, which includes long-term temporary residence and permanent residence, or at your consular representative in the country of which you hold a valid passport.
