Hi,

I have dual citizenship (British & South African)
I was born in the UK but then my parents emmigrated over to Africa when I was 9 months old to work and live permantly. I was on my parents passport to begin with but after a certain amount of time I gained my own citizinship. I did all my education over in South Africa and also worked in S.A after I matriculated. I then decided to travel and was based in the UK. I am still in the UK as I intend to travel more before going back to South Africa permantly as my family is still in S.A.
I don't have a naturilization certificate and not sure if I need one as I have a S.A identification number and citizenship number in this book. My passport is coming up to expire in Feb 2011. Will this be a problem to renew as I dont want to loose my passport as I want to return to South Africa permantly to look after my mother who is getting old. Please can you advise on what I should do as all these passport forms can be so confusing.

Kind Regards

No, you can be in South Africa for 100 years and still won't be able to apply for citizenship by naturalization if you've been on a temporary resident permit during your stay.

You need to get Permanent Residency which can be achieved by
i)Being married to a South African for 5 years
ii)Applying for a Scarce Skills work permit will entitle you to apply for Permanent Residency immedietely
iii)Working in the republic for 5 years(Proof that you have had a valid work permit for 5 years)
iv)Setting up a business in RSA and employing South Africans and proof of business and/or profit/loss

So first tackle getting permenant residency then only can you think of applying for Naturalization
