Obtaining a skilled worker visa within New Zealand is a relatively straight-forward process. The government website has a detailed page describing all of the necessary procedures that skilled migrants must go through in order to obtain a work visa under the skilled migrant category at http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/skilledmigrant/caniapply/requirements/default.html.
Firstly you must show a medical document showing a recent physical examination that proves you are in good health. This includes a chest x-ray, along with your physical medical evaluation. Since New Zealand is interested in people who display a long-term desire to work towards the good of the country, you will need to be younger than 55 years of age.
You will also need to prove that you can speak sufficient English as well as provide a police report. This is a simple background check to prove that you are not a notorious criminal.
The skilled worker visa is obtained once the government of New Zealand has determined that you have the skills they are looking for to perform certain tasks. The government website has a list of both short-term skills and long-term skills desired, defined as a Skill Shortage List, or areas where they are lacking specific long-term or short-term employees.
Everything is based upon an Expression of Interest points system. This is an application that you fill out, and for every skill and years you performed that skill you are awarded points depending on how New Zealand currently has the skills and years of work related experience rated. Every fortnight they send out an invitation to people who scored higher than 140 points on their EOI form. Anyone with lower scores is looked at on an individual basis.
Once you have been invited to apply, you simply follow the instructions and you are on your way to obtaining a skilled worker visa for New Zealand.
