Moving to another country can be a daunting task. There are so many variables to consider. Insurance, visas, immigration procedures, banking, housing, new vehicle, shipping your possessions from your previous home…the list can go on. So what are some things that can help ease the transition and make it as painless as possible?
One of the first things any individual or family should consider when preparing for an international move is: do I need all of this stuff? First off, a lot of things you may have acquired over the years is of sentimental value, and while many of those things cannot be replaced, there are things which cost an inordinate amount of money to ship which can easily be replaced upon arrival at your final destination. Furniture, dishes, bedroom sets, vehicles…these are all things which can be considered “disposable” in terms of moving overseas.
With the continually rising cost of shipping, it may be worth your time to sell your “perishables” before you move, in order to avoid thousands of pounds worth of fees. For example, if you have a computer desk that only cost you fifty pounds, it may very well cost you more than you paid for the desk to ship it internationally. Why bother when you can simply buy a new one upon arrival?
Additionally the cost of shipping a vehicle can be enormous. It is often times more sensible to simply sell the old vehicle and use the money you saved in shipping to buy a new one when you arrive, rather than deal with all of the fees associated with moving.
Undertaking a move to Australia can be expensive, so lightening the load in any way possible will help make your settling in a lot less painful and potentially less taxing on your wallet.
