The latest immigration news from Australia is in regards to cutting the temporary visa programmes because of the vast number of immigrants coming in from other countries. Monash University demographic expert Bob Birrel suggests that the rising rates of unemployment could be worsened if the Australian government continues to allow skilled migrants on temporary visas into the country during the global recession.
A large part of the problem stems from how many people move to Australia without researching properly, and find themselves in a situation where they are making little/no money and clinging to the concept that by sticking it out for just a few more months they will earn that treasured residency permit. This has led to the “immigration waterslide” effect that America has been suffering from for the past few years where employers find that it is cheaper to illegally employ immigrants vs. citizens because they can pay lower-than-government-standard wages to the immigrants, while counting on the fact that the immigrant will not complain because they want the residency status more than anything else.
If you are someone who is looking to move to Australia on a visa, you should take the time to properly complete all of your paperwork and apply for the proper visa. With the skyrocketing unemployment rates in other parts of the world, people are reaching out in desperation for jobs anywhere they can get them. While it may seem like a good idea to just pack up and go somewhere at the drop of a hat, it is an unrealistic approach. Don’t rely on temporary visas. Take your points test, use the government website (http://www.immi.gov.au/), and make sure you aren’t one of those who are skewing the unemployment statistics.
